AI Agents

Accounting is becoming agent work. Here is how to start.

By Maurice Berdugo, CEO, Ledgersync · · 6 min read

Accounting is moving toward AI, and I believe it is moving faster than most firms expect. The firms that do well will build agents to do most of the routine work, or automate as much of it as they can, and spend their own time on the parts only a person can do. That is the direction we are building toward at Ledgersync. It is not a promise about what any firm will get on day one. It is where we see the work going, and it is already happening now.

Not the future. Now.

An agent is an AI that does one specific task for you, using your tools and your data, and then waits for your approval. One agent sorts new bank activity into categories. Another checks which clients have a broken bank connection. Another turns a statement PDF into a file you can import.

Small, specific agents are the ones that work. They are easy to review, easy to correct and easy to trust. This is not a distant idea. The same AI apps you may already use, ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Grok Bot, can run these tasks today, and they only get stronger from here.

What we have built so far

Ledgersync has built several agents and keeps building more. They connect to your AI app through the Ledgersync plugin, so the AI works with your real client data instead of guessing. You sign in with your normal Ledgersync login, bank passwords are never typed into the chat, and anything that changes data shows you a preview first.

The top five plugin features

  1. Connect banks from chat. Ask the AI to create a secure connect link for a client, or to fix a broken connection. The client signs in on a secure page, never in the chat.
  2. Transactions, balances and statements on demand. Ask for a client's latest transactions, current balances or a statement, and get them in the conversation.
  3. AI bookkeeping into QuickBooks Online. The AI categorizes waiting transactions, shows a preview with totals and warnings, and posts to the client's QuickBooks Online only after you say yes. It is built for accounts that do not have a QuickBooks bank feed, so nothing posts twice.
  4. AI rules setup. For Manual and QuickBooks Online clients, the AI proposes rules by name, shows what each rule would fill and warns you when one is too broad. Rules are saved only after you approve them, and the same vendor then files the same way next month.
  5. Statement PDF to transactions. Upload a statement PDF and get the transactions back in chat, plus a CSV, Excel, QBO or OFX file.

In Grok, tell it to wait for your yes before it saves anything. Claude and ChatGPT ask on their own.

What this looks like in a normal week

The best agent work is the kind you can read before it happens.

  • Rules you read before they save. Instead of a black box, the AI shows each proposed rule and what it would do. You accept the ones that make sense. Rules are what make results repeat.
  • A question before month-end. Ask, "Which bank connections need attention today?" and get one list for the whole firm. Ask, "Is this client ready to start the close?" and get one short report on account updates, statements and broken connections.
  • A clear line on what the AI posts. It posts expenses and deposits after a preview. It leaves transfers between a client's own accounts, bill payments, splits and classes for you.

The AI does the first pass. You do the review.

Why the bridge matters

Our goal is that most of the work accounting software does today can be done through agents, and Ledgersync is building the bridge. Bank feed data and AI sit on one side, and your tools and your clients sit on the other. We keep investing more in automation, and we will keep widening what the agents can do. We will not describe a feature as live until it is.

Replace several tools with agents you build

Many firms pay for several systems that each do one small thing. Agents give you another option. You can build an agent that connects Ledgersync bank feed data and AI to a custom application you create, so one set of agents does the work that used to take several subscriptions.

A simple way to estimate ROI

We will not hand you a made-up number, because your firm is not anyone else's firm. Work it out with your own figures.

  1. Count the routine hours. Number of clients, multiplied by the routine hours you spend on each client per month.
  2. Choose the share you would hand to agents. Be conservative. Start with the work you can review quickly.
  3. Price your time. Hours handed over, multiplied by your hourly rate. That is the value of the time you get back.
  4. Add software you can retire. If agents replace a tool, add what you pay for it each month.
  5. Subtract what the setup costs you. The result is your monthly net benefit. Multiply by twelve for the year.

Put the formula in one line: clients × routine hours × share handed over × hourly rate, plus software spend retired, minus what it costs to run.

Run the same arithmetic with your own volumes and rates. More on AI and agents in accounting: the Ledgersync blog.

What stays with you

AI should not replace the part of your job that clients value most. When agents carry the routine work, your time goes to a quick review and to what AI cannot do:

  • Financial advisory. Cash flow, pricing, tax planning and growth decisions need your judgment and your relationship with the client.
  • Dealing with the IRS. Notices, calls and representation need a person who is accountable.
  • Customer-specific issues and finances. Every client has a situation that no template covers. That is where you earn your fee.

Review is your job too. An agent proposes and shows its work, and you approve. That keeps your name and your judgment on every result.

How to start

Start with one agent task, on one client, that you already do every month. Connect the client's bank, ask the AI to show you the transactions and propose rules, read the preview, and approve what is right. Add a second task when the first feels routine.

If you want to see it with your own clients, there are two good ways to begin:
